Built for the Maritimes

Salt air, storms and wet snow. A roof that cannot rust.

Maritimes weather is salt air and fog on the coast, Atlantic winter storms and post-tropical storms, and winters that freeze, thaw and freeze again under wet snow. Here is what an Interlock® aluminum roof does about each, and where it has limits.

Salt air

Aluminum cannot rust

Salt spray, fog and wind-driven rain are part of life on a Maritimes coast, and salt is what wears out steel roofing once its coating is breached. Aluminum reacts with oxygen to form a thin, tough oxide layer that seals the metal against further corrosion and re-forms if scratched. There is no steel core in an Interlock® panel to rust, on the shore or inland.

Storms

Winter storms and post-tropical storms

Hurricane Fiona struck Atlantic Canada on September 24, 2022 and caused over $800 million in insured damage, the most costly extreme weather event ever recorded in the region. Interlock panels lock to each other on all four sides with the fasteners concealed, and wind resistance is warranted to 193 km/h (120 mph) installed to manufacturer specification. No roof is storm-proof: hurricane-force wind damage is a matter for your home insurance, and it is excluded from our labour warranty.

Freeze-thaw

Melt, refreeze, repeat, under heavy wet snow

A Maritimes winter crosses the freezing mark again and again, often with rain on snow. Each cycle loosens asphalt granules and curls shingles; cedar takes on water that freezes in the grain. Aluminum absorbs nothing. Interlock panels weigh roughly 2 to 3.5 kg per square metre, a fraction of concrete tile, which leaves the structure's capacity for wet snow, and smooth aluminum lets snow slide, so we plan snow guards over entries, walkways and the driveway at the quote.

Ice dams

We look at the attic, not just the roof

Ice dams form when heat escaping into the attic melts snow that refreezes at the cold eaves. No roof covering stops that on its own, and ice damming is excluded from the material warranty. At the estimate we look at insulation and ventilation with you and tell you what we see.

Wildfire

Class A Fire Rated Available, as a complete assembly

In 2023 the Tantallon fire near Halifax and the Barrington Lake fire in Shelburne County together burned over 25,000 hectares, and more than 200 homes were lost. FireSmart Canada says a Class A fire-rated roof assembly offers the best protection. Under ASTM E108 (CAN/ULC-S107 in Canada) a fire classification belongs to an assembly, not a panel: on our roofs Class A is achieved with two layers of GAF VersaShield® over 12 mm (15/32-inch) plywood. Aluminum itself does not ignite, but no roof is fireproof. If your home backs onto woodland, ask us to quote the Class A assembly.

Finish

A finish made to keep its colour

The Alunar® finish is warranted for 30 years and reflects much of the sun's near-infrared energy: solar reflectance from 0.25 to 0.55 depending on colour, and thermal emittance of 0.84. Interlock roofs can cut cooling-energy use by up to 25% compared with conventional dark roofing; actual savings vary.

What matters where you live

Halifax, Dartmouth, Bedford, Lower Sackville, Cole Harbour, Fall River and Tantallon: harbour salt air, winter storms and the suburbs on the edge of the woods. Our office is in Burnside, and Dartmouth has more Interlock® roofs in our job book than any other town.

Salt air

Aluminum forms a protective oxide layer and cannot rust, so salt spray has no steel to work on.

Homes near the woods

The 2023 Tantallon fire reached the edge of the city. Class A Fire Rated Available, as a complete assembly; no roof is fireproof.

Older homes

The look of slate or cedar on a century home, a saltbox or a farmhouse, at roughly 2 to 3.5 kg per square metre.

Straight answers

What Maritimes homeowners ask us first.

All of our answers ↗

Who installs Interlock® roofs in the Maritimes?

Maritime Metal Roofing Ltd. is the certified Interlock® roofing contractor for Nova Scotia, New Brunswick and Prince Edward Island. The company was founded in 2007 and works from one office in Dartmouth (Burnside) that serves all three provinces; consultations are on Zoom or at your home. Interlock® roofs have been going on Maritime homes since 1995. The panels are made in Canada by Interlock Roofing Ltd. at its plant in Delta, BC.

Will an aluminum roof stand up to salt air?

Yes: aluminum cannot rust. It reacts with oxygen to form a thin, tough oxide layer that seals the metal against further corrosion and re-forms if scratched, so there is no steel core to rust once a coating is breached. That is why aluminum is the usual choice for homes on the coast. The Alunar® finish on the panels carries a 30 Year coating warranty.

How does an Interlock roof handle winter storms and hurricanes?

The panels lock to each other on all four sides with the fasteners concealed, and wind resistance is warranted to 193 km/h (120 mph) installed to manufacturer specification. No roof is storm-proof. Damage from hurricane-force winds is a matter for your home insurance, and hurricane-force winds and wind storms are excluded from our 10 Year Limited Labour Warranty.

What warranties come with an Interlock roof in the Maritimes?

Two, in writing. The manufacturer, Interlock Roofing Ltd., provides the Guardian Lifetime Limited Material Warranty: material and finish, for as long as the original purchaser owns the home, transferable once, workmanship excluded; the Alunar® coating is warranted for 30 years. Maritime Metal Roofing Ltd. provides a 10 Year Limited Labour Warranty covering Nova Scotia, New Brunswick and Prince Edward Island. The labour warranty is not transferable and excludes hurricane-force winds, wind storms, hail, ice damming, and snow and ice shedding.

Can you install over my old shingles?

Sometimes. A single layer of asphalt shingles may be roofed over only if an inspection finds it suitable. Cedar shingles and shakes, concrete tile and natural slate always come off first. Every Interlock profile needs a minimum 3/12 roof slope, and we check both at the free consultation.

Which parts of the Maritimes do you install in?

All of Nova Scotia, New Brunswick and Prince Edward Island, from one office in Dartmouth. In Nova Scotia: Halifax Region, the Annapolis Valley, the South Shore, the North Shore, Cape Breton, the Eastern Shore and Western Nova Scotia. In New Brunswick: Greater Moncton and the Southeast, Greater Saint John, the Fredericton Capital Region, the Fundy Coast, the Southwest, the Upper Saint John River and Woodstock corridor, and Miramichi. On PEI: Charlottetown and Central PEI, Summerside and West PEI, the North Shore and Cavendish, and Eastern PEI. Town pages are on novascotiaroofing.com, newbrunswickroofing.com and peiroofing.com. Newfoundland and Labrador is not served from these sites.
