Aluminum roofing in the Maritimes
We install Interlock® aluminum roofs on homes, cottages and condo and townhouse complexes across Nova Scotia, New Brunswick and Prince Edward Island: interlocking panels that can't rust in salt air, locked on four sides with the fasteners out of the weather. Made in Canada, installed by our own Maritimes company since 2007, priced in writing after one visit.

What an Interlock® aluminum roof is
An Interlock® roof is made of interlocking aluminum panels, each locked to its neighbours on all four sides with the fasteners concealed under the panel above. Nothing is screwed through the weather surface, so there is no exposed screw head or loose edge for wind, driven rain or salt spray to work on. The panels are stamped to look like slate, cedar shingle, shake or tile.
The panels are made in Canada by Interlock Roofing at its plant in Delta, BC. In Nova Scotia, New Brunswick and Prince Edward Island they are installed by our own company, Maritime Metal Roofing Ltd., founded in 2007, from one office in Dartmouth, NS, that serves all three provinces.

Why aluminum, for a Maritimes roof
Salt air can't rust it
Aluminum forms a thin oxide film that blocks further oxidation (ASM International), and it contains no iron to rust. There is no steel inside an aluminum panel for salt spray, fog or melt water to reach, so a scratch, a cut edge or a fastener hole has nothing to corrode.
Post-tropical and winter storms
The panels lock on all four sides with no tabs for a gust to lift. Wind resistance is warranted to 193 km/h (120 mph) installed to manufacturer specification. Storms can exceed any rating, and hurricane-force wind damage is a home insurance matter, not a warranty one.
Freeze-thaw, all winter
Maritimes winters swing above and below freezing again and again, with rain on snow. Asphalt and wood take on water that freezes and thaws; aluminum absorbs none, so there is nothing in the panel for freeze-thaw to split or loosen.
Heavy, wet snow
The panels weigh roughly 2 to 3.5 kg per square metre, a fraction of concrete tile or natural slate, which leaves the structure's capacity for snow. Smooth aluminum sheds snow, so we plan snow guards over entries, decks and walkways at the estimate.
Storms are part of roofing here
Fiona, on September 24, 2022, caused over $800 million in insured damage, the most costly extreme weather event ever recorded in Atlantic Canada (Insurance Bureau of Canada). Environment and Climate Change Canada ranked it Canada's top weather story of 2022: it became post-tropical before landfall but lost little of its strength, its strongest winds, 179 km/h, were felt along Nova Scotia's North Shore, and its central pressure was the deepest ever recorded for a storm over land in Canada.
That is why we talk about wind with every homeowner: what the wind warranty covers (resistance to 193 km/h (120 mph) installed to manufacturer specification), what it doesn't (storm damage beyond it, which is for your home insurance), and the details that matter on an exposed coastal lot: the edges, the ridge and the flashing.
The profiles, and what Maritimes homeowners choose
Five aluminum profiles: Slate (the top seller), Cedar Shingle, Shake, Mediterranean Tile and Standing Seam, plus solid copper for bays, porches and accents. Nine colours: Solid Copper, Copper Penny, Hunter Green, Black, Deep Charcoal, Musket Grey, Tile Red, Colonial Brown and Tudor Brown. Every profile needs a minimum 3/12 slope.
In our Maritimes job book the most common profiles are the legacy Interlock Shingle (3,575), Slate (1,642) and Cedar Shingle (273). The legacy Interlock Shingle is an earlier profile, no longer made, and it is still on thousands of Maritime homes; today's choices are the five above.

- 10 Year Limited Labour Warranty from Maritime Metal Roofing Ltd. on our installation (Form 5290 NS, covering Nova Scotia, New Brunswick and PEI).
- Wind resistance warranted to 193 km/h (120 mph) installed to manufacturer specification.
- Class A Fire Rated Available, as a complete assembly: two layers of GAF VersaShield® over 12 mm (15/32-inch) plywood, per ASTM E108. FireSmart Canada recommends Class A fire-rated roofing.
How a roof gets done
| Step | What happens |
|---|---|
| 1. Consultation | On Zoom or at your home, anywhere in Nova Scotia, New Brunswick or PEI. We go through profiles and colours, look at photos of roofs like yours, and answer questions. |
| 2. Measure and inspect | We measure the roof and check what's on it now. Cedar, concrete tile and natural slate always come off; a single layer of asphalt can be roofed over only if the inspection finds it suitable. |
| 3. Fixed price in writing | Anything the inspection finds goes into the written quote before you sign, not into a change order later. |
| 4. Installation | Our own Maritimes installers, to the manufacturer's specification, built to your provincial building code, with flashing, ventilation and snow guards as planned. |
| 5. Warranties registered | The Guardian material warranty and our labour warranty, with our Maritimes service team after the job. |

Questions, answered
Who installs aluminum roofing in Nova Scotia, New Brunswick and PEI?
Maritime Metal Roofing Ltd., the certified Interlock® roofing contractor for the Maritimes, installs the Interlock® aluminum roofing system across all three provinces from its office at 101 Thornhill Dr #105, Dartmouth. The company was founded in 2007 and installs every roof itself. Call (782) 825-6416.
Does an aluminum roof hold up to salt air?
Yes. Aluminum forms a protective oxide layer and contains no iron, so it cannot rust, and an Interlock® panel has no steel core for salt spray to reach. On the coast, rinse salt and dirt off from the ground with a hose now and then, as you would on any roof, and never use a pressure washer.
How does an aluminum roof handle hurricanes and post-tropical storms?
The panels interlock on all four sides with concealed fasteners, and wind resistance is warranted to 193 km/h (120 mph) installed to manufacturer specification. Storms can exceed any rating: Fiona's strongest winds reached 179 km/h on Nova Scotia's North Shore (Environment and Climate Change Canada). Hurricane-force wind damage is a home insurance matter and is excluded from our labour warranty.
Is aluminum roofing good for Maritimes winters?
Aluminum absorbs no water, so the freeze-thaw of a Maritimes winter has nothing to work on, and its smooth surface sheds snow. Ice dams are a different matter: they come from heat loss into the attic and from ventilation, no roof stops them on its own, and ice damming is a stated exclusion of the material warranty. We look at ventilation and insulation with you.
Is an aluminum roof better than a steel roof near the ocean?
Steel depends on its zinc or aluminum-zinc coating to keep from rusting, and coastal air is one of the harder environments for that coating. Aluminum has no steel to rust and is about a third the weight. Steel roofing usually costs less up front. Our steel vs aluminum guide sets out the differences.
How much does an aluminum roof cost in the Maritimes?
It depends on the roof's area, pitch and complexity, what comes off, and the profile. Our metal roof cost page shows real price ranges from our own recent Maritimes contracts; your own price is fixed in writing after one free visit.
Can an aluminum roof go over my asphalt shingles?
Sometimes: a single layer of asphalt can be roofed over only if our inspection finds it suitable. Cedar shakes, concrete tile and natural slate always come off first.
How long does an aluminum roof last?
Aluminum has been known to last over 100 years. That is a property of the metal, not a promise; what you get in writing is the Guardian Lifetime Limited Material Warranty, the 30 Year Alunar® Coating Warranty and our 10 Year Limited Labour Warranty.
